Plecos have earned the label of a fish that eats pretty much everything. Wood, apples, and broccoli are all foods that a pleco can and will eat. But will these cute armored catfish eat peas?
Of course, plecos can, will, and do eat peas. It does take a little prep work to prepare the pea, but it’s not much and totally worth it doing to see the fish so happy to eat something other than algae wafers and normal fish food.
Preparing Peas for Plecos
As I mentioned previously, it does not take much effort to prepare peas for plecos. First, you should take the shells off the peas before feeding. It’s not 100% necessary, but it will make it a little easier for the fish to eat the peas if they are deshelled. The shell is way too hard for them to eat, so they will just leave them and then you must clean then up.
You should also boil the peas before feeding. Again, it’s not totally necessary, but it will soften them up a little, which makes it easier for the fish to chew them.
It does not matter if the peas are frozen or fresh. You have to cook them anyway.
Peas actually sink unlike other vegetables, so you don’t have to worry about figuring out a way to keep them on the bottom.
Do Plecos Like Peas?
Yes, plecos like peas a lot. You will notice that they will scarf up the peas once they reach the bottom of the tank.
This makes them a perfect treat for the fish. It’s fun to watch the fish get so excited about the food.
